THE MATHEMATICAL PROPHECY
Daniel 9:24-27

THE CONTEXT

In the first year of Darius the Mede (539 BC), Daniel is reading the prophecies of Jeremiah concerning the 70 years of Babylonian captivity. He understands that the time is near for Israel's restoration. Daniel prays, confessing the sins of Israel, and the angel Gabriel appears with one of the most mathematically precise prophecies in all of Scripture.

"Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy." β€” Daniel 9:24

THE 70 WEEKS EXPLAINED

The Hebrew word שָׁבֻגִים (shabua) means "sevens" β€” these are weeks of years, not days.

THE CALCULATION

70 weeks Γ— 7 years per week = 490 years
Total time "determined" for Israel 490 YEARS

Gabriel then breaks down these 490 years into specific segments:

"Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times." β€” Daniel 9:25
Period Duration Years Event Status
7 weeks 7 Γ— 7 49 years Decree to rebuild β†’ City rebuilt FULFILLED
62 weeks 62 Γ— 7 434 years β†’ Messiah the Prince arrives FULFILLED
69 weeks 69 Γ— 7 483 years From decree to Messiah FULFILLED
β€” β€” See below Messiah "cut off" / Israel set aside FULFILLED
70th week 1 Γ— 7 7 years The Tribulation FUTURE

THE MATHEMATICAL PRECISION

The Starting Point

The decree "to restore and to build Jerusalem" was issued by Artaxerxes Longimanus to Nehemiah:

ARTAXERXES' DECREE

Date of decree Nisan 1, 445 BC
Reference Nehemiah 2:1-8

The Calculation to Messiah

Using prophetic years of 360 days (as established in Genesis 7:11, 7:24, 8:3-4 and Revelation):

69 WEEKS TO MESSIAH THE PRINCE

69 weeks Γ— 7 years = 483 years
483 years Γ— 360 days = 173,880 days
From Nisan 1, 445 BC + 173,880 days
ARRIVAL DATE NISAN 10, 32 AD

NISAN 10, 32 AD

This is the exact day of Jesus Christ's Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem β€” the one day He publicly presented Himself as Israel's King, fulfilling Zechariah 9:9: "Behold, thy King cometh unto thee... riding upon an ass."

The prophecy predicted Messiah's arrival to the exact day β€” 173,880 days in advance.

MESSIAH "CUT OFF"

"And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary..." β€” Daniel 9:26

"Cut off" β€” the Hebrew word Χ›ΦΈΦΌΧ¨Φ·Χͺ (karath) means to be cut down, destroyed, killed. This is the crucifixion.

"But not for himself" β€” He died not for His own sins (He had none), but for the sins of others. The substitutionary atonement.

"The people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary" β€” This was fulfilled in 70 AD when the Roman legions under Titus destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple. The "prince that shall come" refers to a future ruler from the revived Roman Empire β€” the Antichrist.

NOT A "GAP" β€” THE EZEKIEL 4 CONNECTION

CRITICAL UNDERSTANDING

Many teach that there is an unexplained "gap" between the 69th and 70th weeks. This is incorrect. The period between is not a gap β€” it is precisely calculated discipline explained by the Ezekiel 4 prophecy.

The Sequence of Events After the 69th Week

WHAT HAPPENED

  • 32 AD β€” Messiah presented as King (Triumphal Entry) β€” Zechariah 9:9
  • 32 AD β€” Israel rejects their Messiah one final time
  • 32 AD β€” Messiah "cut off" (Crucifixion) β€” Daniel 9:26, Isaiah 53
  • 70 AD β€” Temple destroyed by Titus and Roman legions β€” Daniel 9:26
  • 70 AD - 1948 β€” Israel set aside as a nation (Ezekiel 4 judgment continuing)

Why Was Israel "Set Aside"?

Israel was already under the Ezekiel 4 judgment with over 1,875 years still remaining. God did not arbitrarily "pause" His prophetic clock β€” He set Israel aside because their national judgment was not yet complete.

God operated on two parallel tracks β€” one for the nation/land and one for Jerusalem/Temple. Each track follows the identical pattern:

  • 1. 70 years of judgment served
  • 2. 2,520 years of extended judgment (360 Γ— 7)
  • 3. Restoration at the exact calculated year

The Ezekiel 4 Prophecy

"Lie thou also upon thy left side, and lay the iniquity of the house of Israel upon it: according to the number of the days that thou shalt lie upon it thou shalt bear their iniquity. For I have laid upon thee the years of their iniquity, according to the number of the days, three hundred and ninety days: so shalt thou bear the iniquity of the house of Israel. And when thou hast accomplished them, lie again on thy right side, and thou shalt bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days: I have appointed thee each day for a year." β€” Ezekiel 4:4-6

THE ORIGINAL JUDGMENT

Judgment on House of Israel 390 years
Judgment on House of Judah + 40 years
Total judgment decreed 430 years

The Leviticus 26 Multiplier

"And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins." β€” Leviticus 26:18 (also v.21, 24, 28)

God warned Israel four times in Leviticus 26 that if they refused to repent, their punishment would be multiplied sevenfold. After the Babylonian captivity, Israel did not fully repent β€” therefore the remaining judgment was multiplied by 7.

THE EXTENDED JUDGMENT CALCULATION

Original judgment (Ezekiel 4:4-6) 430 years
Time served in Babylon βˆ’ 70 years
Remaining judgment = 360 years
Leviticus 26:18 multiplier (no repentance) Γ— 7
Extended judgment period 2,520 years

The 2,520 Years Extended Judgment

CALCULATION: 536 BC β†’ 1948 AD

Extended judgment begins 536 BC
Duration: 2,520 prophetic years
2,520 years Γ— 360 days (prophetic year) = 907,200 days

"The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you." β€” Zechariah 4:9

The 2,520 Years Extended Judgment

CALCULATION: 517 BC β†’ 1967 AD

Extended judgment begins (Temple rebuilt) 517 BC

THE PROPHETIC PRECISION

Two sets of 70 years. Two sets of 2,520 years. Two restorations.

The period between Daniel's 69th week and the 70th week is not an arbitrary gap. It is the exact duration of the Ezekiel 4 judgment that had to be completed before God would restore Israel and resume His prophetic program with the nation.

1948 and 1967 marked the completion of that judgment. Israel is back. Jerusalem is restored. The stage is now set for the 70th week.

"And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled." β€” Luke 21:24

THE 70TH WEEK β€” THE TRIBULATION

"And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate." β€” Daniel 9:27

The Players

"He" β€” This refers back to "the prince that shall come" (v.26) β€” the Antichrist, a ruler from the revived Roman Empire.

"Confirm the covenant with many" β€” The Antichrist will make a 7-year covenant (treaty) with Israel, likely guaranteeing their security and right to worship.

THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION

Jesus Himself confirmed Daniel's prophecy and pointed forward to its future fulfillment:

"When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains..." β€” Matthew 24:15-16

The "abomination of desolation" is when the Antichrist:

  • > Breaks the covenant with Israel
  • > Stops the Temple sacrifices
  • > Sets up an image of himself in the Temple (2 Thess 2:4)
  • > Demands worship as God (Rev 13:14-15)

This triggers the Great Tribulation β€” the worst period in human history (Matthew 24:21).

PROPHETIC CONNECTIONS

Daniel 9's 70 weeks integrates with the entire prophetic framework:

THE COMPLETE TIMELINE

  • 445 BC β€” Decree to rebuild Jerusalem (Daniel 9:25)
  • 32 AD β€” 69 weeks complete: Messiah presented and "cut off"
  • 70 AD β€” Temple destroyed, Israel scattered
  • 70 AD - 1948 β€” Ezekiel 4 judgment continues (Israel set aside)
  • 1948 β€” Israel restored (Ezekiel 4 judgment on land complete)
  • 1967 β€” Jerusalem restored (Ezekiel 4 judgment on city complete)
  • NOW β€” Stage being set for 70th week (Beast system infrastructure)
  • FUTURE β€” 70th week begins: Antichrist confirms covenant
  • FUTURE β€” Middle of week: Abomination of Desolation
  • FUTURE β€” End of week: Christ returns, Stone strikes statue

CONCLUSION

Daniel 9's prophecy of the 70 weeks is one of the most mathematically precise prophecies in Scripture. It:

  • βœ“ Predicted Christ's arrival to the exact day (173,880 days)
  • βœ“ Predicted Messiah would be "cut off" (crucified)
  • βœ“ Predicted the destruction of Jerusalem (70 AD)
  • βœ“ Integrates with Ezekiel 4 to explain Israel's setting aside
  • βœ“ Provides the framework for the 7-year Tribulation
  • βœ“ Identifies the Antichrist's actions (covenant, abomination)

With Israel restored (1948) and Jerusalem recaptured (1967), the Ezekiel 4 judgment is complete. The prophetic clock that was "paused" β€” not arbitrarily, but according to God's precise discipline β€” can now resume. The stage is set for the final week of Daniel's prophecy.

"And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh." β€” Luke 21:28
